Vets at state-of-the-art facility have already performed several successful surgeries.

Another vital landmark has been reached on the road to the first running of the $20 million SAUDI CUP in Riyadh in February, with the opening of a brand new, state-of-the art equine hospital.

The Riyadh Equine Hospital, a large, purpose-built facility located on Equestrian Club of Riyadh grounds, contains two surgical theatres and, impressively, has stabling for 26 horses.

Currently undergoing its final fitting with the latest diagnostic equipment, the hospital has begun receiving outpatients for imaging, lameness and emergency colic procedures. The large facility was fully functional by the end of January and is equipped to to offer routine elective procedures, such as arthroscopy, throat surgery and fracture repairs.

Gastroscopy and intensive care of medical cases are also available and, according to Dr Guy Alexander, Clinical Director and Head Surgeon for the Riyadh Equine Hospital, the first colic operations have already been performed and the horses returned to their homes.

Alexander said: “We’ve already performed several operations successfully, including for colic. Another case we were particularly pleased with just recently was a mare that arrived with a very large hole in her uterus post foaling. The hole would not have been accessible by a midline incision (how we perform colic surgery) so she was sutured blindly (just by feel, with a hand in the uterus), and a drain placed in the abdomen to flush it, to treat peritonitis. The mare and foal have just gone home.”

The implementation of the Riyadh Equine Hospital was overseen by the world-renowned Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons group in Newmarket, England, and the facility will also act as a referral service to vets working in the quarantine barns for any cases that cannot be dealt with in situ.

The SAUDI CUP weekend takes place on Friday February 28 and Saturday February 29, and will feature 16 races with total prize-money of more than USD$30 million, and with several races taking place on turf for the first time in Saudi Arabia’s racing history.

Tickets for both days, including hospitality packages for all budgets, can be purchased online at www.thesaudicup.com.
