The 76th annual Keeneland September Yearling Sale from Sept. 9-22, represents the largest offering of Thoroughbred yearlings in the world. Last year, 2,916 yearlings sold for $377,140,400, for a sale-record average of $129,335.

The first three days of the sale comprise the prestigious Book 1, where the 569 yearlings in the catalog were selected for their outstanding pedigree sand conformation.

Here is a closer look at the numbers from the 2019 catalog:

4,644: Horses – 2,332 males and 2,312 fillies.

2,130: Yearlings registered as bay. Of the other yearlings, 1,225 are dark bay or brown, 881 are chestnut, 406 are gray or roan, one is black and one is white.

569: Yearlings in Book 1, the premier offering of horses that takes place during the first three sessions of the sale.

281: Number of 2019 North American and international stakes that September Sale graduates have won through Aug. 19.

231: Sires represented by yearlings in the entire sale. 

140: Consignors represented in the entire sale.

98: Yearlings in Book 1 whose siblings are Grade 1 winners.

90: Yearlings from the second crop of American Pharoah, who won the 2015 Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland and was named Horse of the Year.

54: Sires represented by yearlings in Book 1.

46: Keeneland barns used to house the sale yearlings (barns are used several times as the sale progresses).

41: Yearlings in Book 1 whose dams are Grade 1 winners.

39: Number of 2019 Grade/Group 1 races worldwide won by September Sale graduates through Aug. 19.
