Superstar Karaka graduate Beauty Generation (NZ) (Road to Rock) has produced another breath-taking performance, brilliantly defending his title in Sunday’s HK$25 million Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin.
Bought for $60,000 at the 2014 Select Sale, Beauty Generation is the reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year and went into Sunday’s race with victories in seven of his last nine starts.
The Hong Kong Mile was more of the same as regular rider Zac Purton had him in the lead for most of the race before putting his rivals to the sword in the home straight. He romped to victory by three lengths, clocking a fast time of 1:33.52.
“That’s what we all hoped we’d see today,” Purton said. “I’m just happy for the horse that he’s come out and produced it on a big stage. He has shown everyone how brutally good he can be.
“His best attribute is he has got a very high cruising speed, he’s very comfortable rolling along at that speed and he can kick off it. For the horses back in the field they’re already struggling to go the pace and when you’ve got to try and reel him in, it’s not an easy thing to do.”
Beauty Generation has now had 26 starts for 13 wins, seven placings and more than HK$60.6 million in prize-money. That’s the equivalent of NZ$12.9 million, which is more than 200 times his purchase price.
Beauty Generation’s back-to-back victories have added to a proud recent record for Karaka graduates in the Hong Kong Mile. Glorious Days (Hussonet) won it in 2013, Ambitious Dragon (NZ) (Pins) in 2012 and Able One (NZ) (Cape Cross) in 2011.
Carlaw Park will offer a Tavistock half-sister to Beauty Generation as Lot 443 in Book 1 of Karaka 2019.
